The postponement of the Asian Games has brought a glimmer of hope to London Olympic bronze medallist Sena Nehwal, with the Badminton Association of India set to conduct another tryout to pick the team for the Intercontinental Championships expected next year. The Hangzhou Asian Games, originally scheduled for Sept. 10-25, were postponed indefinitely on Friday due to a recent surge in COVID-19 cases in China.
New dates will be announced in the near future.
“It’s still a year away, it’s really hard to say now. But of course the performance of the players has to be re-evaluated, so we’ll try to find a window to try out again,” BAI secretary Sanjay Mishra told PTI.
From April 15 to 20, trials for major events such as the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Thomas and Uber Cup were held at the KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium.
However, Cena’s decision to skip the event in order to manage the workload sparked controversy.
When asked if the two-time CWG gold medalist still has a chance at the Asian Games, Mishra said: “Of course, a year is a long time, and if someone is doing well, whether it’s Senna or an upcoming player, they should A chance to represent the country.” The 32-year-old from Hyderabad had questioned the timing of the selection trial and blasted the BAI for “eliminating” her from the CWG and the Asian Games later this year.
While Cena could not be reached, her husband and fellow player Parupalli Kashyap said the way the trial was conducted didn’t make sense, needed to give players more time, and had to develop a better format.
“The Asian Games have been postponed, but I think the players’ performance in the game should be considered rather than trial training,” Kashyap said.
“I think the timing of this trial is terrible. There is no need to prioritize, but seniors need to be intimidated at least 4-6 weeks ago. I think Saina can still achieve a lot, but she can’t be ready in 10 days Trial in the window.” Kashyap is still recovering from a hamstring injury and is aiming to return to the Indonesian Super 500 in June.
