ISRO and MapmyIndia team up to produce Google maps through a local map portal

The Indian Space Research Organization and MapmyIndia, a provider of positioning and navigation technology solutions, announced a cooperation plan to jointly provide India’s best, completely indigenous mapping portal and geospatial services.

According to Rohan Verma, CEO and Executive Director of MapmyIndia, it combines the power of MapmyIndia’s digital maps and technology with ISRO’s satellite imagery and Earth observation data catalog.

He called this a breakthrough milestone in India’s journey to Aatmanirbhar Bharat, where Indian users will not rely on foreign organizations to provide maps, navigation and geospatial services, but instead use solutions made in India.

Verma said in the title of an article on LinkedIn: “You no longer need Google Maps/Earth”.

According to ISRO, the Department of Space (DoS) belonging to ISRO worked hand in hand with MapmyIndia to combine its geospatial expertise and use its geographic portal to build a total solution.

DoS signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday with CE Info Systems, a geospatial technology company that owns MapmyIndia.

ISRO, headquartered in Bangalore, said that under this partnership, the geospatial expertise of DoS and CE information systems will be utilized through their respective Geoportals.

The space agency said in a statement that this collaboration will enable them to utilize the Earth observation datasets, NavIC, Web services and APIs (application programming interfaces) provided in MapmyIndia, Bhuvan, VEDAS and MOSDAC geoportals, together Identify and build overall geospatial solutions. .

The Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) called NavIC (Indian Constellation Navigation) is India’s own navigation system developed by ISRO. Bhuvan is a national geographic portal developed and hosted by ISRO, including geospatial data, services and analysis tools.

According to ISRO, VEDAS (Visualization of Earth Observation Data and Archive System) is an online geoprocessing platform that uses optical, microwave, thermal and hyperspectral EO data, covering applications dedicated to academics, research and problem solving.

MOSDAC (Meteorological and Marine Satellite Data Archive Center) is a database for all ISRO’s meteorological missions, dealing with information related to weather, oceanography and tropical water cycle.

Verma said there are many reasons why Indians will get better with local solutions for maps and geospatial services.

He said: “MapmyIndia is a responsible local Indian company, ensuring that its maps reflect the true sovereignty of the country, describing India’s borders according to the Indian government and hosting the maps in India.”

Through a partnership with ISRO, MapmyIndias’ end-user maps, applications and services will now be integrated with ISRO’s vast catalog of satellite imagery and Earth observation data.

It said that compared with foreign map applications and solutions, this will be a better, more detailed and comprehensive solution, and privacy-centric, ultra-local and local map solutions for Indians.

Verma said that foreign map solutions will bring many hidden costs.

He said: “For example, foreign search engines and companies claim to provide free maps, but in fact, they make money by targeting the same users based on advertisements that violate user privacy and auctioning the private location and mobile data of these users.”

“This should shock all citizens.”

“On the other hand, MapmyIndia is morally opposed to the advertising-led business model of such companies, so there is no advertising business model. By using MapmyIndia maps and apps instead of foreign map apps, users can better Protect their privacy,” he said.

He said, “Sustainable, direct, and clean business model” ensures that MapmyIndias maps and applications can be used for free, and can also provide users with free advertising.

“The MapmyIndias map covers all 6.3 million kilometers of road networks and all 7.5 million villages on building floors in India and cities, more than 7,500 cities, and covers all 6.3 million kilometers of roads within and within India ,” the company statement said.
