Google CEO Sundar Pichai (Sundar Pichai) detailed a new “hybrid” work model for employees. Pichai emphasized that “the future of work is flexibility.” On Wednesday, he introduced a series of changes in Google’s work culture. These changes will allow 60% of employees to work together in the office “several days a week”, and 20% of them can work together in the office. Office work comes from different office locations, and 20% of people can permanently work from home.
Pichai wrote an email to his employees and later shared it with them as a blog post to inform them of the new changes. He said that a new mixed work week will be enforced at Google, in which employees will spend about three days in the office and two days in the most suitable place for work.
“Because the time in the office will be focused on collaboration, your product areas and functions will help determine the days for the team to meet in the office. Due to the nature of the work, it may be necessary to work on site more than three days a week.” He Say. Employees can also choose to work elsewhere or completely remotely, and adjust their compensation accordingly based on the choices they make. These options need to be approved by their team leader.
In addition, employees will be allocated four weeks of time each year to enable them to work temporarily from places other than the head office. The purpose is to allow everyone to have greater flexibility during summer and vacation travel. During the 2021 pandemic, there will also be a resettlement working day to help employees regain their strength. Pichai announced that the next global working day will be May 28.
In the first quarter, Google’s parent company Alphabet saved US$268 million (approximately Rs. 19.8 billion) in corporate promotional, travel and entertainment expenses, compared to “mainly because of COVID-19” in the same period last year. On an annual basis, this will exceed 1 billion US dollars (about 74 billion rupees).
