Google Play is receiving new prepaid subscription plans and console UI to improve developer monetization. The announcement came during today’s Google I/O developer conference. These changes are intended to give developers more flexibility in selling subscriptions on the Play Store. They now have the option to set up multiple basic plans and offers. These new changes are expected to reduce operational costs for developers by reducing the need to create and manage new SKUs.

Google has confirmed that it has made changes to the Play Console for developers by splitting existing SKUs into subscriptions, basic plans, and offers. This gives developers a new option to sell users a 1-month prepaid plan as well as an auto-renewing plan or an annual auto-renewing plan. Prepaid plans can be expanded through in-app purchases or from Google Play. The plans are expected to boost subscription revenue for developers in regions such as India and Southeast Asia where a “pay-as-you-go model” is the norm. They can also appeal to users who are hesitant to buy an auto-renewing plan.

Developers also now have the flexibility to support their basic plan with special offers. Offers can be customized to provide different pricing in specific regions. They can also be used to offer special offers to eligible users. This can be a opportunity for developers to regain subscribers by publishing custom offers like a second free trial or a win-back offer.

Google sees potential in the subscription model. In March, it launched Google Play Pass in India, giving users access to and games without ads, in-app purchases and prepaid fees. Android users in India can purchase the service by paying Rs. 99 or Rs per month. 889 per year. Google has also released a prepaid plan for Play Pass priced at Rs. 109 subscriptions for one month.
