Friends: The class reunion is coming to Asia soon. WarnerMedia announced on Friday that the highly anticipated “Friends Gathering” special program will be broadcast on HBO and HBO Go in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam), Hong Kong and Taiwan. In Australia, “Friends: Reunion” will be streamed on Foxtel’s streaming service Binge. Friends: “Reunion” will premiere on HBO Go at 3:01 pm on May 27 (US Standard Time) and on Binge at 5:02 pm EST – this is the same as May 27 The same time it premiered in the United States on HBO Max at 12 a.m. Pacific time.
If you are not authorized to use the HBO Go streaming service, you can watch the “Friends Gathering” episode on HBO Asia at 9pm on May 27th. This does not apply to India/South Asia, as HBO and HBO Go are not available here. WarnerMedia told Advertisement Shout that India still has no plans to release “Friends: The Reunion”.
Consider that WarnerMedia has brought some of the previous HBO Max originals to Asia in this way, including the last hot ticket “Justice League” Snyder Cut (Histor League Snyder Cut). This is also true for Australia, where Binge carries a Snyder Cut. However, although the Justice League Snyder Cut is available in other non-HBO territories (including India) through the video-on-demand platform, WarnerMedia does not seem to have any similar plans for the “Friends Party” special.
Why can’t I use HBO and HBO Go in India?
WarnerMedia did have an HBO channel in India until December of last year. But since it closed. Even if it does exist, the Indian HBO channel will not display “Friends: Reunion” due to licensing policies. HBO is fully committed to showing Warner Bros. movies in India. It has never shown HBO original works such as “Game of Thrones”, let alone HBO Max original works belonging to different entities. As for HBO Go, WarnerMedia has never brought its streaming service to India. Instead, HBO continues to collaborate with Disney + Hotstar to provide all content.
Therefore, WarnerMedia has not even discussed the distribution plan of HBO Max in India/South Asia. HBO Max expanded to Latin America and the Caribbean in June, moving out of exclusive residences in the United States, and later in 2021, HBO services in Europe will be upgraded to HBO Max. This shows that HBO Go Asia will also receive similar treatment.
But in India, WarnerMedia is happy to provide HBO shows for Disney + Hotstar, while other content is spread across Netflix (including all 10 seasons of Friends of Joy) and Amazon Prime Video (Warner Bros. Movies). Don’t expect “Friends: Reunion in India” among these three companies (Netflix, Disney + Hotstar or Prime Video).
