The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will be Electronic Arts’ next licensed game, and EA will return to the LOTR game. Heroes of Middle-earth is in development for Android and iOS smartphones, with limited beta testing scheduled to begin in summer 2022. According to EA, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will be entirely inspired by the literature of JRR Tolkein – with two movie trilogy and a TV series in the works – and will feature turn-based combat and well-known characters from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings series, as well as high-fidelity graphics, cinematic animation and stylized art.
In an announcement Monday, EA revealed that it is working with Middle-earth Enterprises on a new free-to-play mobile game called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth. EA describes the upcoming game as a “collectible role-playing game” (RPG) for smartphones. Fredrica Drotos, chief branding and licensing officer at Middle-earth Enterprises, said the game was developed by California-based EA Capital Games and will be “entirely inspired by the Middle-earth as described in JRR Tolkien’s literature.”
While the publisher is no stranger to the world of The Lord of the Rings – having released PC and console games based on past films – The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will be EA’s first game based on The Lord of the Rings ‘ and The Hobbit’s storylines, places, characters and legends. You’ll need a constant internet connection, and the game will offer in-game purchases, including random in-game items – which are common in most free-to-play games.
While details on the game are scant, EA says the game will offer immersive storytelling, allowing gamers to experience the book’s iconic stories as they battle the evils of Middle-earth. According to EA, The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will feature turn-based combat, a collection system, and many characters from the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit universes.
The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth will go into limited regional beta testing on Android and iPhone this summer, meaning a beta version of the game could be out in less than two months. EA has yet to reveal details about which regions will have access to the Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth beta.
