Disney+ Hotstar now has more than 18.5 million paying users, bringing the total number of Disney+ users worldwide to 73.7 million. Disney’s senior executive vice president and chief financial officer, Christine McCarthy, revealed these figures during the entertainment giant’s quarterly earnings call on Thursday. Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar added 16 million subscribers in the past quarter (from July to September), thanks to the recently concluded 2020 IPL season, the latter helped the most. Given that IPL is available for the annual Disney + Hotstar VIP plan, you can expect these subscribers to stay for at least one year.

In his speech to analysts, McCarthy said: “Disney+ had 73.7 million paying users at the end of the fourth quarter, an increase of 16 million users from the third quarter. The increase in Disney+ Hotstar users is the biggest driving force behind the delay of the IPL peak season. Disney+ Hotstar subscribers now account for more than a quarter of our total global subscribers. The overall ARPU of Disney+ [average revenue per user] This quarter it was US$4.52 (approximately Rs 337). However, excluding Disney + Hotstar, it is $5.30 (approximately 395 rupees). “

As early as April, Disney provided the first official number for its Hotstar streaming service and pointed out that it has 8 million paying users. The new numbers mean that Disney + Hotstar has actually more than doubled its paying user base. Moreover, these numbers may not fully account for the sudden increase in growth that the Indian Premier League (IPL) (the annual Twenty20 cricket tournament) brought to Disney for the quarter that ended on October 3. The 2020 season of IPL ends on November 11.
