Home rental company Airbnb said on Wednesday that it is hiring former Apple designer Jony Ive and his company LoveFrom to design Airbnb’s new products and services through a multi-year agreement. Ive is a close creative collaborator with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

Ive worked at Apple for nearly three decades, leading the design of the candy-colored iMac, which helped Apple rebirth from the dying and iPhone design in the 1990s.

He left Apple last year. Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky said in a blog announcing the working relationship that Ive will also help develop Airbnb’s internal design team. “Johnny and I have been good friends for many years. He is kind enough to provide me with guidance and advice. We hold the same belief in the value and importance of creativity and design. Each of us not only believes in making objects and interfaces, And we believe in production services and experience. We have seen how design promotes trust and achieves more interpersonal relationships, which people desperately need in an unprecedented period of loneliness and disconnection,” Chesky said.

According to people familiar with the matter, Airbnb told employees on Wednesday that chief design officer Alex Schleifer will switch to a part-time job and that the company will look for permanent replacements.

The source said that the deal with Ive and his company LoveFrom coincided with Airbnb’s efforts to raise approximately US$3 billion (approximately Rs 221 billion) in its upcoming initial public offering.

Airbnb is expected to become one of the largest and most anticipated stock listings in the United States in 2020, and this has been a sensational year for IPOs.
