Microsoft recently announced that it will acquire Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion (approximately Rs 51,099 crore). The wheels have been launched and the transaction is expected to close in fiscal 2023. Activision Blizzard currently owns well-known games such as World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Overwatch. However, one of its most famous franchises is Call of Duty. The acquisition casts a shadow over the multi-platform nature of the Call of Duty game. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer mentioned in a recent tweet that they have been in talks with Sony’s leaders to resolve these issues.
inside tweet, Spencer confirmed Microsoft’s intent “to abide by all existing agreements following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.” He mentioned that Sony PlayStation will continue to launch Call of Duty games for the time being. Similar concerns emerged when Microsoft acquired Zenimax Media in September 2021. Zenimax Media is the parent company of Bethesda, best known for games like Dishonored, Doom, Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. At the time, Microsoft also opted to abide by existing agreements related to Deathloop, which launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive.
The Activision Blizzard acquisition also hints at Microsoft’s desire to dominate the mobile gaming space. Activision currently owns mobile game studio King, the developer of the Candy Crush game. Activision also successfully launched Call of Duty: Mobile for Android and iOS.
Recent reports suggest that Microsoft plans to bring as many Activision games as possible to its Xbox Game Pass subscription service. Additionally, it may turn some of these games into Microsoft exclusives. However, PlayStation fans may have to buy an Xbox console to play future games from their favorite franchises when these agreements are in play.
