Account of Twitter Witholds Rajya Sabha MP Sukhram Singh Yadav: Report

As originally reported by MediaNama, Twitter has rejected the account of Rajya Sabha member Sukhram Singh Yadav. This move follows the response of social media platforms to government orders. Twitter mentioned in its response that no action was taken against the accounts of politicians. Yadav’s account seems to be kept only in India, as his Twitter page is reportedly accessible from other countries.

As MediaNama pointed out, Access his profile, The user will receive the following message: “@MPSukhram’s account has been detained in India due to legal requirements.” Twitter has not officially confirmed the reason behind this move.

Twitter published a blog post on Twitter on Wednesday, claiming that the government’s account blockade is inconsistent with Indian law. Twitter did mention that it took action on hundreds of accounts starting on January 26 and suspended more than 500 accounts.

However, the social media platform emphasized that no action has been taken against accounts related to media entities, journalists, activists and politicians. Twitter stated that it believes that taking action on such accounts would “infringe its fundamental right to speak under Indian law.”
