The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) collaborated with Kantar to release the “ICUBE 2020” report, and predicts that the number of active Internet users (AIU) in India is expected to increase from 622 million in 2020 to 9+ million in 2025. It shows that the adoption rate of the Internet in India will increase by about 45% in the next five years. According to the report, about 43% of India’s population currently uses the Internet at least once a month. Maharashtra has the highest Internet penetration rate, with 61% of the population using it.

IAMAI Kantar ICUBE 2020 reports that out of India’s 1.43 billion population, 622 million are active Internet users. This is equivalent to 43% of India’s urban and rural population. Of the 622 million people, 323 million are from urban areas and 299 million are from rural areas. Compared with urban areas, the Internet penetration rate in rural areas grew faster last year. According to reports, in Indian cities, active Internet users have increased by 4% over last year, while in rural areas, it has increased by 13% over last year. The report further provides interesting statistics. For example, of the total Internet population in India, 58% are men and 42% are women.

The report also shows the distribution of the active Internet population in each state. At the state level, Maharashtra has the highest penetration rate of active Internet users at 61%, followed by Goa (60%) and Kerala (59%). Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar have the lowest Internet populations at 29%, 29% and 24% respectively. According to the report, the cities with the most active Internet users are Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

According to reports, the ratio of male to female active Internet users is 57:43 in urban areas and 58:42 in rural areas. The ICUBE 2020 report stated that mobile phones have been a key driver of Internet growth in India, claiming that all active Internet users use smartphones to access the Internet. 100% of active users use mobile phones to access the Internet, 17% of users use personal computers to access the Internet, and 6% of users use other devices such as tablets, streaming media devices, smart speakers, and smart TVs. According to the report, an active Internet user spends approximately 107 minutes on the Internet every day, and most Internet users browse entertainment, communication, and social media activities.
